The City of London Corporation, a main source of arts subsidy in the UK, owns and funds the Barbican EC2 Centre. Opened in 1982, the center was hailed by the Queen as one of the world’s modern wonders.
The Barbican EC2 is among the world’s biggest examples of Brutalist layouts, a French word which means ‘raw’ and commonly refers to the exposed characteristic of the concrete of a brutalist structure’s layout. The design was all the rage during the 50s up to the 70s and strongly used in the layout of contracted and government-owned building.
The Conservatory has a large space and boasts of 2,000 types of tropical plants and hundreds of tropical fishes.
