Did you know that...
One of the most prominent Fenchurch Street EC3 landmarks is the 20 Fenchurch Street building. The skyscraper towers the area due to its impressive height of 525 ft but also because of the uncommon design that has earned it the Walkie-Talkie nickname. In 2015, the building won the Carbuncle Cup for the ugliest architectural design. However, this doesn’t seem to affect its purpose as a commercial building as more than 90% of the space is rented to insurance, law, and financial companies. 20 Fenchurch Street is currently owned by a Hong Kong food company.
The Lloyd’s Register of Shipping Building, located at 71 Fenchurch Street, was designed by Thomas Edward Collcutt in 1899. The frontage was constructed in 1901 and extensively decorated with allegorical sculpture by George Frampton, a leading member of the New Sculpture movement. That is why Lloyd’s Register is a Grade II listed building today.
