New Haw supposedly developed around the 17th-century lock gate built near The White Hart pub. Haw is an old term for lock gate. The lock keeper’s cottage made an appearance in the 1964 movie First Men in the Moon. The old building was the protagonist’s Cherry Cottage. The popular shopping area The Broadway developed in the 1950s. It features numerous stores, pubs, and restaurants. Brooklands Museum has pictures of the upside-down landing of a monoplane in the area. Rumor has it that several planes crashed here at the beginning of the 20th century.
New Haw is part nature reserve. Heathervale Park is one of the largest open spaces. The Station pub was named Claremont and Catherine of Aragon in the past. Black Prince pub is part of the Greene King pub family founded in 1799 by Benjamin Greene. It is the largest pub retailer and brewer in the UK. The old Woodham Motors building is a New Haw landmark. It’s a pre-war construction that is still in great condition. The Animal Health and Veterinary Laboratories Agency is one of the main South East London test centers for the H5N1 virus that causes the bird flu.
New Haw All Saints School was established in 1873 as a school for poor people. The pupils worked at the nearby farms and often missed school during busy times of the year, such as the harvesting time. The school lacked proper conditions and staff. During the 1906 winter, the temperature dropped to 1 °C in the classroom. At one point, the teacher was an 11 years old girl. In 1911, the school turned into All Saints’ Church. Fullbrook School is a KT15 school established in 1954. A school vote decides the name of its houses. Originally, the school houses carried the names of British Royal Houses. The current names are Griffin, Phoenix, Dragon, and Pegasus.
