Northwick Park takes the name of Lord Northwick. He owned Sheepcote Farm that included the area back in the day. On the grounds of nearby University of Westminster campus, stood a golf field until World War II. Playgolf Northwick Park was established in 2006 on the site of the former golf course. In 2009, National Golfers Magazine named it UK’s number one 9-hole golf grounds. The only way by vehicle into the park is through the HA1 area North Wembley. The park features softball areas, Gaelic football pitches, cricket pitches, and a pavilion that is a popular filming location.
Northwick Park Hospital opened in 1970 is a major North West London health facility. Architect John Weeks designed the building that was called “an indeterminate architecture”. Queen Elizabeth II attended the opening ceremony. Simon Le Bon the lead singer of Duran Duran worked here as a theater porter. Famous patients include Chilean General Augusto Pinochet. The hospital has a rare Paternoster lift system. The sitcom Green Wing takes place in this hospital. It is also featured in the police series Prime Suspect, The Omen movie, and sitcom Fawlty Towers. Since 1976, the hospital is host to Radio Harrow, an HA1 charity radio station.
Northwick Park tube station was established in 1923 as Northwick Park and Kenton station. In 1937, the name changed to Northwick Park. The opening of the station kick-started the development of housing. The nearby Harrow School was founded in 1572 by landowner John Lyon. The current Emir of Qatar and four other monarchs studied here. Other notable former pupils include politician Winston Churchill, poet Lord Byron, singer James Blunt, explorer Tom Avery, governor of the Bank of England John Saunders Gilliat, Olympic gold medalist Douglas Lowe, tennis player Ian Collins, astronaut Nicholas Patrick, and pianist Aristo Sham.
