Oxshott name derives from the Anglo-Saxon personal name Ocga and “sceat” which translates to “piece of land”. An 1179 reference mentions the area as Occesete. About 200 people were living here at that time. Forestry and farming were the main occupations. No major roads were crossing the hamlet so trading wasn’t an option. Development began in 1885 after the railway was built. The original name of the station was Oxshott and Fairmile. Mansions and villas were built here attracting wealthy residents. Oxshott is called “UK’s most expensive village” and also “the village with the most footballers.” Many professional footballers live here because Chelsea Football Club has its main training ground in nearby Stoke D’Abernon.
