Wandsworth (also known as Wandsworth Town) is a south London district in the London Borough of Wandsworth, situated 7.4 km (4.6 miles) southwest of Charing Cross. It is recognized as one of Greater London’s 35 major hubs according to the London Plan. Wandsworth was named after the River Wandle, which flows into the River Thames at the town.
Earlsfield station (in Travelcard Zone 3), Wandsworth Common station and Wandsworth Town station (in Travelcard Zone 2) are the closest railway stations in the area. Southfields station, in Wandsworth’s Southfields district, is the tube station that serves the area.
The town is home to London’s biggest prison, Wandsworth Prison, which was built in 1851. Notable people associated with Wandsworth Town include former Prime Minister Tony Blair, guitarist and songwriter Mick Jones, actor Daniel Massey, cricketer Kevin Pietersen, author George Eliot, and novelist William Makepeace Thackeray.
