In the Middle Ages, Chigwell IG7 was known as Cinghe uuella and Chikewelle. The name possibly derives from Cicca’s well or from king’s well or from the Anglo-Saxon word for wood “weald”.
Athlete Sally Gunnell was born in Chigwell IG7 and attended West Watch High School. Other famous former pupils include journalist Kate Silverton, sports analyst Jack Murrell, and actor Michael French.
Ronnie O’Sullivan the famous snooker player lived in Chigwell IG7 since he was a child. Other notable residents are Music of Life record label owner Simon Harris, footballer Bobby Moore, and George Shillibeer who is known for developing the iconic London omnibus.
Chigwell is a civil parish and municipality in the Epping Forest region of Essex. Traditionally a countryside agricultural village, it is now mainly residential and near Greater London’s northern boundary. The area is considered as one of the three wealthiest places in Essex, which include Buckhurst Hill and Loughton.
