Hampstead Swiss Cottage NW3 takes its name after The Swiss Tavern that resembled a Swiss chalet. The tavern was built on the site of an old tollgate keeper’s cottage. The name changed to Swiss Inn and later to Swiss Cottage.
Hampstead Theatre moved here in 1962. For 40 years, the theater operated in a portable cabin until 2003 when it moved into the current building. The theater hosts plays by famous playwrights such as Harold Pinter and Nina Raine.
Swiss Cottage is a cultural center found in north west London and Camden. There are several local amenities including Sir Basil Spence’s Grade II-listed Swiss Cottage Central Library, Odeon IMAX Cinema, and Hampstead Theater. The Royal Central School is also situated in this area. In early 2006, the Swiss Cottage Leisure Center was reopened after its redevelopment and now features a climbing wall, a gymnasium, and two swimming pools.
Considered as an important part of the borough, this area’s name has a fascinating beginning that goes back to mid-19th century. There used to be an inn called Swiss Tavern that was constructed in 1804. Its style and architecture is a great example of the usual Swiss chalets.
Swiss Cottage/Finchley Road is known as a district center in the London Plan with numerous shops in the area.
