Palmers Green is a north London residential district of the London Borough of Enfield. It is situated approximately 13 km (8 miles) north of Charing Cross and within the N13 postcode zone. Palmers Green is home to the biggest Greek Cypriots population outside of Cyprus and is frequently dubbed as ‘Palmers Greek’ or ‘Little Cyprus’.
In 1608, Palmers Green N13 was called Palmers Grene. The name derives from the Palmer family and the Middle English word “grene”. The Palmers were a notable 14th-century local family.
In the 17th century, there were only a few houses here. By the 19th century, the area developed into a village with 54 buildings. The 16th-century Broomfield House and the grade II listed Truro House are area landmarks. The Fox pub dates back to the 17th century. It was featured in one of the Harry Potter movies.
Poet Stevie Smith moved to Palmers Green N13 when she was three years old and lived here her entire life. Two of The Clash members Joe Strummer and Tymon Dogg shared a flat on Ash Grove. Richard Attenborough, Roger Moore, and Vivien Leigh performed at the Intimate Theater.
Nearest towns around Palmers Green include Southgate, Tottenham, Muswell Hill, Bowes Park, and Winchmore Hill. There are several churches in the area such as Saint Monica’s Church (Roman Catholic) and St. John’s Church (Anglican). Tottenhall Infant, Oakthorpe Primary, Hazelwood Primary School and Palmers Green High School are just some of the educational systems in the area.
Palmers Green railway station serves the area, with northbound trains that run to Stevenage and Hertford North and southbound trains that run to Moorgate. Several trains stop at Gordon Hill as well. Operating locally are bus routes N29, W9, W6, W4, 329, 299, 232, 141, 121, 102 and 34. The A10 and North Circular Road are the primary trunk motorways in the area.
