Stockwell is a south London area situated within the London Borough of Lambeth and was part of the county of Surrey until 1889. Stockwell SW9 name derives from the Old English word “stoc” that means tree trunk or post.
Book illustrator Arthur Rackham was born in the area. Joan Littlewood who is considered the mother of modern theater was also born in the area.
Stockwell Garage was the largest unsupported roof span in Europe when it opened in 1952. It is a Grade II listed building and London’s most important building according to writer Will Self. London’s deep-level air-raid shelters under the London Underground are found here.
Stockwell station was opened in 1890. King Edward VII who was Prince of Wales at that time attended the opening event. Platanos College was formerly Stockwell Park High School. Doctor Annie McCall opened Clapham Maternity Hospital in Stockwell. In 1936, it was renamed after her.
Stockwell has a significant amount of social housing such as Stockwell Gardens, Mursell, Stockwell Park, Landsdowne Green, Spurgeon and Studley. Places of interest in the are include Stockwell Bus Garage, London Deep Level Shelters, Jean Charles de Menezes Memorial and Stockwell War Memorial Clocktower.
London Underground Stockwell station on the Northern and Victoria lines serve the area. Other stations nearby include Oval and Vauxhall stations (to the north of Stockwell) and Clapham North and Brixton stations (to the south). There are numerous major thoroughfares that pass through the area such as A23, A2217, A3 and A3036.
