The name comes from the proper name Bicca and it most likely means Bicca’s clearing. The first mention of the area comes from 1279. Bickley Hall estate formed around a hunting lodge that belonged to the Wells family. Architect Robert Mylne designed Bickley Hall house in 1790 for shipbuilder John Wells. Blackfriars Bridge, Cally House, Hexham Bridge, and Addington Palace are other notable Mylne works. John’s nephew hired architect Robert Smirke to work on additions to the estate that he inherited from his father William, John Wells’s brother. Housing development started in 1860. Bickley Hall was demolished in 1963. The local railway station opened in 1858 as Southborough Road and renamed Bickley two years later.
Bickley Park is considered to be one of the most expensive areas in London. Singer Pixie Lott, architect Ernest Newton, author Peter Quennell, architect Charles Henry Bourne Quennell, educator Ethel Hurlbatt, writer Florence Farr, and artist Gertrude Hermes are some of the most notable Bickley residents. Bromley High School was established in 1883 in Bromley. In 1981, it relocated to this South East London area. A Royal Albert Hall concert celebrated the school’s 125th anniversary. Tennis player Naomi Cavaday, politician Marion Roe, actress Tilly Keeper, the first female member of the Royal College of Physicians Ivy Evelyn Woodward, and anthropologist Marilyn Strathern went to Bromley High School. Bickley Primary School, Scotts Park Primary, and Bullers Wood School for Boys are other local schools.
Jubilee Country Park is a real gem. Here you have the chance to have a walk through 25 hectares of wildflower meadows and ancient woodland. The London Outer Orbital Path or the LOOP goes through this park. There is also a cycling route that connects Jubilee Country Park with Petts Wood. Whitehall Recreation Ground is a large children’s playground. Widmore Recreation Ground park features a play area as well. This BR1 area has a longstanding sports tradition. Bickley Park Cricket Club was established in 1868. The 150th anniversary was a week-long event that featured cricket games, dinners, and parties.
