The first mention of this North London area comes from 1188 when Pope Clement gave the Bosci de Boreham to Abbey to use as a resource for swine food. Bosci de Boreham means the Wood of Boreham. Starting with 1920, Borehamwood became an important UK film and television center. Several film studios opened here and the area became known as the British Hollywood. Scenes from popular movies such as the first Star Wars trilogy, 1980 The Shining, 1956 Moby Dick, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Indiana Jones, and The Dam Busters were filmed here at Elstree Studios. Recent TV shows filmed here include Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, Big Brother, and Inspector Morse.
Some of the most notable Borehamwood residents include TV presenter and reality TV judge Simon Cowell, musician Sir Ray Davies of The Kinks, actress Shona McGarty who plays Whitney Dean in EastEnders, footballer Dele Alli from Tottenham Hotspur, watercolor painter John Frederick Tayler, politician Den Dover, Oscar nominee actor Jaye Davidson, Classical Chinese professor Angus Charles Graham, former footballer and manager Tim Sherwood, and celebrity chef Gino D’Acampo. Borehamwood Shopping Park is a large shopping center that has numerous stores such as Marks & Spencer Simply Food, Dorothy Perkins, JD Sports, Next, and many others.
Cowley Hill Primary School, Parkside School, Hertswood Academy, and Elstree University Technical College are some of the educational facilities in this WD6 area. Hillside School served as a filming location for the Grange Hill TV series. Borehamwood is twinned with Huainan, China, Fontenay-aux-Roses, France, and Offenburg, Germany. The local railway station opened in 1869 as Elstree. It changed names a couple of times. Nowadays it is called Elstree & Borehamwood. The London LOOP walking route passes close to this station. Meadow Park football ground is home to Boreham Wood F.C., Arsenal Ladies, and Arsenal Football Club Academy.
