Did you know that...
Crystal Palace is a South London borough that was named after the structure that stood in the district from 1854 to 1936 (the year when a terrible fire destroyed the building).
It is located southeast of Charing Cross (about 7 miles) and has one of London’s highest spots at 112 meters (367 feet), providing views over the city. Crystal Palace has no clear borders and spans 3 postal neighborhoods and 5 London districts and is contiguous with Upper Norwood, South Norwood, Sydenham, Penge, Dulwich Wood, Anerley, and Gipsy Hill.
The Crystal Palace Park houses a collection of full-size dinosaur sculptures. The replicas were built in 1854 and were the world’s first dinosaur sculptures.
French writer Emile Zola lived in Crystal Palace SE19 for a year after he left France. Francis Pettit Smith, the inventor who was part of the team that came up with the screw propeller, also lived in the area. He is remembered for his contribution to the SS Archimedes, the first steamship that used the screw propeller.
Crystal Palace SE19 was used as a filming location for The Italian Job, The Pleasure Garden, Our Mother’s House, and The Chemical Brothers’ video clip The Setting Sun.
