In the Domesday Book, Denham is recorded as Deneham. The name means homestead in a valley and it comes from Old English. Saint Mary Church is one of the notable buildings. The building features a flint and stone Norman tower. Several old brick houses can be found on Village Road. This street featured in movies and series. Southlands Manor is a Grade II listed building. The four chimney stacks date from the 17th century. The English Heritage states that the building is from the 16th century, however, the timber in the main building dates from the 15th century. The Old Bakery is another historic building in Denham. It dates from the 14th century.
Actor Roger Moore is one of the most famous former residents. He lived in the Sherwood House on Tilehouse Road. John Mills is another famous actor who lived here. His former house, Hills House, bears a blue plaque in his honor. Musician Michael Oldfield lived in this part of North West London on Tilehouse Lane. The lead singer of the rock band Sweet, Brian Connolly, lived in the area as well. Denham Film Studios ran from 1936 until 1952. Notable movies made here include Brief Encounter and Great Expectations. Music for Vertigo and Star Wars was recorded here. The studio was taken down in 1980.
Buckinghamshire Golf Club can be found nearby this UB9 area. It was established in 1992 and hosted important golf events such as the Senior Tournament of Champions and Andersen Consulting World Championship of Golf. The River Misbourne runs through the course. The club house is in the Denham Court Mansion. The current building dates from the 18th century but a part of it is at least 700 years old. This Grade II listed mansion that houses the Heron Restaurant is a popular wedding venue. The local railway station opened in 1906 as Denham – Junction for Uxbridge.
