Did you know that...
Erith Marshes is a space of grazing marsh next to London’s River Thames in south area. It’s owned by Thames Water and is situated alongside Crossness Sewage Treatment Works. It’s also a site of Metropolitan Importance for Nature Conservation in Bexley.
The vastness of these marshes were found from Woolwich until Erith and have been built upon at present. Thames Water owns the small part that exists and runs the renowned wildlife area.
Between the years 2007 and 2010 were two construction plans that were built on ½ of the marsh that exists. A new industrial and commercial complex was constructed by Tilfen Land, and the incinerator has become larger.
Crossness Sewage Treatment Works is located next to Erith Marshes DA18. It was opened in 1865 as Southern Outfall Works. It was designed by chief engineer Joseph Bazalgette and architect Charles Henry Driver.
The pumping station is decommissioned since 1950. In 1970, it became a Grade I listed building. In 2009, the building was used as a filming site for the movie Sherlock Holmes. In 2011, scenes from The Crimson Petal and the White were filmed here. The station is also featured as a mission location in The Getaway: Black Monday video game.
