Did you know that...
Citizens of the Metropolitan Borough of Finsbury (which was later absorbed into the borough of Islington) elected Dr. Chuni Lal Katial, a doctor and politician born in the Punjab Region, as a mayor of Finsbury. In 1938, he became the first UK’s South Asian mayor of the city.
Finsbury EC1 used to be a wetland in the medieval ages. Starting with the 17th century, stabilization works started which allowed the area to be turned into a place for leisure activities. It took almost 100 years to turn the old swamp into a place that would support buildings. One of the first buildings was St Luke’s church which is now a music venue. It belongs to the London Symphony Orchestra and it’s commonly called LSO St Luke’s. Over the years, famous artists such as Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, Van Morrison, and Patti Smith performed here or recorded concerts.
