The name Letchmore Heath comes from the Old Saxon words “leche mere” and it means muddy pond. The pond in question can be found on the southern side of the village green. The pond and the green are popular destinations for the residents of this WD25 area. There’s also a pub called the Three Horseshoes in this area. One can find the pub on the northern side of the village green. Letchmore Heath does not have a railway station. However, it is just three miles from Watford so the residents use the railway station in that area. Radlett railway station is also close.
Letchmore Heath does not have a main road. The M1 and M25 motorways are close to this North London area. This village has around 150 houses. Letchmore Heath is very close to Elstree Studios. It was used as a filming location for several movies including the 1960 horror movie Village of the Damned featuring George Sanders. Graphic designer David Rudnick is a notable person who hails from Letchmore Heath. He spent his childhood years here.
The founder of the Hare Krishna society used to spend a few months per year in Letchmore Heath. He built the Bhaktivedanta Manor in the area. This is a Gaudiya Vaishnavism temple. It is the largest property in the UK owned by the International Society for Krishna Consciousness. It is one of the most popular Radha Krishna temples in Europe. The property used to be called Piggott’s Manor and its history traces back to the 13th century. The name derives from the owner at that time Thomas Picot. The name Piggott’s Manor is used since 1920. In 1973, former Beatles member George Harrison donated this property to the Hare Krishna movement. The building is Grade II listed and it can be found on the western side of Letchmore Heath.
