Did you know that...
Anerley SE20 takes its name after the Scottish word “anerly” which is the equivalent of lonely but it can also mean only. In the 19th century when Scottish silk manufacturer, William Sanderson, became landowner in the area there were no houses. So, the first house he built was named Anerly. The road took the name of the house and later the entire area borrowed the name. It was Sanderson who donated land so that the railway could be built. Anerley SE20 station was close to his house.
Anerley is a wonderful place for bankers who wish to save money and are not concerned about their location’s status. Thomas Crapper, a plumber who is known for water closet improvements, used to live in this area.
