Beckton E6 takes its name after Simon Adams Beck. He was the chairman of the Gas Light and Coke Company. Beckton Gas Works was constructed here in 1868. It was Europe’s largest gas house. The derelict gas house was used as a filming location for the war scenes in Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket.
Beckton is a part of the London Borough of Newham and was named after Simon Adams Beck, the governor of Gas Light and Coke company.
When footballer Jermain Defoe scored his 100th Premier League goal, he made a B sign with his hands to honor his place of birth. A significant Lithuanian community lives in Beckton. Such films as Full Metal Jacket, For Your Eyes Only and Nineteen Eighty-Four were shot in the area.
