Did you know that...
Bermondsey, a borough in Southwark, London, is situated west of Rotherhithe, east of Newington and southeast of London Bridge. During the Middle Ages, it was the center for leatherworking and was developed into a warehousing and industrial district in the 18th and 19th century. World War II’s aerial bombings destroyed a large area of Bermondsey, and it went through residential and commercial renovation in the last part of the 20th century.
The first mention of Bermondsey SE1 is in the 11th century in the Domesday Book where it is recorded as Bermundesy. The bigger part of the area was owned by King William. His half-brother owned a smaller part. At one point, Knights Templar owned land here as well. Shad Thames street was named after the military order. There is also a mention of a church which is most likely Bermondsey Abbey.
Wee Willie Harris, the singer who is regarded as the first British who adopted the rock and roll music style was born in Bermondsey SE1.
