Did you know that...
Historically, East London was a heart of theatre life at all times. In the Tudor period, multiple inn-yard theatres were first established there. Later in 1576, the James Burbage’s The Theatre, one of the London’s first permanent theatres, was constructed in Shoreditch. Interesting fact, that it is this theatre that was dismantled and moved across the Thames, piece by piece, to create world famous the Globe Theatre in 1599.
East London is the birthplace of many celebrities such as film makers, actors, musicians, and sportsmen. Director Alfred Hitchcock and musician David Bowie are perhaps two of the most famous persons who hail from East London. Well-known actress Angela Lansbury was also born here. Ray Winstone the amateur boxer turned actor lived here from his birth until the age of ten. Comedian Bud Flanagan, actress Honor Blackman who played a Bond girl part, and BAFTA TV award winner Warren Mitchell also come from this part of London.
