Herne Hill is a community of around 15.000 people. One of the local landmarks is Brockwell Park. A green area over 50 hectares big.
Herne Hill SE24 was called Island Green or Ireland Green. The name most likely derives from the presence of the River Effra in the area. In 1792, the area was known as Hearns Hill or Herns Hill. There’s evidence that a human settlement existed here since 1291 or even earlier.
Legend has it that the Spring-heeled Jack, a Victorian folklore creature, appeared in Herne Hill SE24. There was news about the sighting in the local paper in 1872.
Half Moon pub dates from 1760. Poet Dylan Thomas was a regular customer. Bands like U2, Van Morrison, and The Police performed here. Singer Frank Sinatra visited the pub in 1970 and gave a spontaneous performance.
