Hoxton N1 is mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086 as Hogesdon. It means Hoch’s farm. In 1598, playwright Ben Jonson dueled actor Gabriel Spencer in Hoxton Fields. The duel resulted in the latter’s death. St. John the Baptist church was founded in 1826.
Actor Peter Dean who played in EastEnders soap opera was born in Hoxton. Filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock worked at Islington Studios in the area. Boxer, weightlifter, and TV presenter Lenny McLean hails from Hoxton.
On October 26, 1605, Lord Monteagle, who was a resident of Hoxton, received a letter. It said that someone was about to blow the Parliament and that Lard Monteagle should stay safe. The letter was later on delivered to Lord Cecile. On the 5th of November, Guy Fawkes was found in the undercroft of the Parliament.
