Henry Thomas Buckle, also known as the Father of Scientific History, was born in the area. His most notable work is the History of Civilization. Poet Ernest Dowson was born here as well. Actor Jude Law is a former famous resident. Politician Matthew Pennycook, model Keeley Hazell, and professional football player Shaun Wright-Phillips lived in the area.
The area is inhabited since Celtic times. Baring Hall Hotel is one of the area’s landmarks. This grade II listed building was built by architect Richard Norman Shaw in 1870. The Desmond Tutu Peace Garden was built in 2009. Archbishop Tutu lived in Lee Grove Park SE12 in the 70s.
Grove Park railway station was opened in 1871. Once the railway was established, the area started to develop as a suburb. Grove Park Hospital was originally a workhouse opened in 1902. Chinbrook Meadows was a dairy farm.
