Did you know that...
Mile End is a borough in London’s East End situated 5.8 km (3.6 miles) east-northeast of Charing Cross. The area is one of the City of London’s first suburbs and lies on the London-to-Colchester road. Mile End became a section of London’s metro area in 1855 and is linked to the London Underground network.
Mile End is recorded back in 1288 as La Mile ende. The name is formed from the Middle English and means ‘the hamlet a mile away’. The distance was in relation to Aldgate in the City of London.
During the Second World War, the area suffered heavily in earlier blitzes. On 13 June 1933, Mile End was hit by the first V-1 flying bomb to strike London. 200 people were made homeless by the blast and 8 killed.
The music video for “Heart Skips a Beat” by Olly Murs and Rizzle Kicks was filmed in the area’s skate park in 2011. The song is part of Olly Murs’s second album ‘In Case You Didn’t Know’.
