Mitcham is a South London borough in the Merton district, located 11.6 km (7.2 miles) southwest of Charing Cross. It is primarily a residential area but densely urban in part and is near localities such as Tooting, Merton, Croydon and Wimbledon.
Mitcham Eastfields and Mitcham Junction are the two stations that serve the area, with train routes to St. Albans, London Bridge (peak hours only), Epsom, Sutton, and London Victoria. Buses services, including night buses to Central London’s Liverpool Street and Aldwych, are also available.
Popular buildings in the area are The Burn Bullock, Old Mitcham Station, St. Barnabas Church and the White Hart Public House. Notable residents of Mitcham include comedian Jo brand, opera singer Neil Howlett, historian Florence Harmer, footballer Mike Fillery, and cricketer David Gibson.
The area is home to a large part of South London’s open green space (460 acres). Mitcham Common is studded with a few buildings and ponds. The Seven Islands Pond, for example, is the largest one. It was created following gravel extraction in the 19th century.
One of the notable buildings of the area is Eagle House. It was built back in 1705 and is a Queen Anne house built in the Dutch style. The building is located on London Road.
M.I.A. is one of the notable residents of Mitcham. The English rapper, singer, and songwriter was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire for her services to music.
