Did you know that...
Morden Park estate initially featured enclosed parkland and a small country house. The Georgian style house was built on top of a hill. It was made in the 1770s for John Ewart, a merchant and distiller. The building is now restored and it’s a popular venue for weddings. The estate also included landscaped gardens and the Morden Park farm. Throughout the years, the estate was occupied by a lot of other people. In the 18th century, it was the property of the Polhill family. Edward Polhill donated money to the parish church. The money was used for the Sunday school. Banker John Wormald owned the estate towards the end of the 19th century.
This SM4 area had a pig farm. After the farm was destroyed by fire in the 1950s, the Merton Campus of South Thames College was built on its former grounds in the 1960s. It was in the same period that the gatehouse was demolished. RG Jones Recording Studio was in Morden Park. This place was next to The George Inn. A number of famous artists, including the Rolling Stones, used this studio. There is a large circular mound in the area’s park. It was thought to be a burial mound from the Iron Age. However, no proof was found during archaeological excavations.
For about 30 years, there was a cycling track around the Morden Park mound. The Morden Cycle Speedway Club was based here. The track is no more, however, remains of it can be seen. The Aero Modelling Club did flying practice on Sunday morning around the mound. Morden Park hosts the Morden Park Holiday Club every year. It is an event that children can attend for a week during their summer holidays. It is organized by the churches of the surrounding area. Most of the suburban housing in this South West London area dates from the 1930s.
