Did you know that...
Oxshott name derives from the Anglo-Saxon personal name Ocga and “sceat” which translates to “piece of land”. An 1179 reference mentions the area as Occesete. About 200 people were living here at that time. Forestry and farming were the main occupations. No major roads were crossing the hamlet so trading wasn’t an option. Development began in 1885 after the railway was built. The original name of the station was Oxshott and Fairmile. Mansions and villas were built here attracting wealthy residents. Oxshott is called “UK’s most expensive village” and also “the village with the most footballers.” Many professional footballers live here because Chelsea Football Club has its main training ground in nearby Stoke D’Abernon.
Chelsea footballers Didier Drogba, Salomon Kalou, John Obi Mikel, and John Terry live here. Racing driver and long distance record breaker Violette Cordery, Liverpool footballer Jamie Redknapp and wife singer Louise Redknapp, Muse member Chris Wolstenholme, tennis player Andy Murray, and golfer Colin Montgomerie are among the famous people that live here. Tilly Smith is another resident of this KT22 area. While on vacation with her family in Phuket, Thailand she recognized the signs of an incoming tsunami. The beach was evacuated in time and no one got hurt. Tilly Smith was just 10 at that time.
Oxshott Heath and Woods is a woods and heathland South London area. A 10th-century Saxon brooch was found here in 1935. The woods were used as a filming location for Monty Python’s Jabberwocky movie. The Canadian army engineers who worked on the Cabinet War Rooms during World War II stayed in Oxshott Heath. Prince’s Coverts is a woodland owned by the Crown Estate. It is named after King Leopold I of Belgium who lived at nearby Claremont Park before he was a king. Jessop’s Well or Chalybeate is an 18th-century spa house built on a mineral spa.
