Shene was the name of the area until 1501. The current name derives from the Richmond Palace built under King Henry VII. He named it after Richmond Castle in Yorkshire. In 1920, the Richmond War Memorial was built to honor the lives lost in World War I and II.
Singer Anastacia, singer Rick Astley, Sir David Attenborough, actress Anna Chancellor, singer Mick Jagger, guitarist Ronnie Wood, comedian Milton Jones, actress Angelina Jolie, and actor Brad Pitt are some of the most famous people that had ties to the area.
The area has many open spaces and parks like Richmond Park as well as numerous protected preservation zones, which consists most of Richmond Hill.
Richmond Park is a landmark. It was established in the 17th century. Scenes from the 2014 Disney movie Into the Woods, 2010 Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, 2018 Patrick, and many other movies were shot in the Richmond Park.
Other places of interest in the area include Riverside Gallery and the Museum of Richmond. There are two theaters and two cinemas, numerous bars and public houses, many privately owned cafes and famous restaurant chains and a hotel, the Bingham Riverside.
Towns close to Richmond include Barnes, Kingston, Teddington, Strawberry Hill, Mortlake, Hampton, East Sheen, and Wimbledon. North Sheen Station and Richmond Station serve the area, while bus routes include 33, 190, 490, H22, R68, and N22. The main road of Richmond is the A316 and runs between the M3 motorway and Chiswick.
