The name Rotherhithe derives from Rederheia that means “landing place for cattle”. The area was also called Redriff and Redriffe. Greenland Dock is the largest surviving dock. Actor Michael Caine was born in Rotherhithe. Footballer Billy Mehmet went to Bacon’s College here.
Bermondsey name derives from the Anglo-Saxon proper name Beornmund. The first mention of the area comes from the 1086 Domesday Book but it’s believed that a 708 document contains a reference to it as Vermundesei.
In the 1980s, Surrey Docks changed name to Surrey Quays. Surrey Commercial Docks functioned from 1696 to 1969. They are named after the Surrey county which is on the south side of the River Thames where the docks were located.
