Southgate is a north London residential area in the London Borough of Enfield, situated 12.9 km (8 miles) north of Charing Cross. The area got its name from being Enfield Chase’s southern gate. Neighboring areas of Southgate are Oakwood to the north, Palmers Green to the east, Osidge to the south, and Whetstone to the west.
The suburban district of Southgate is close to the London Underground John Walker station (on the Piccadilly line), while to the southwest is Arnos Grove station and to the north is Oakwood. The area has many large open spaces and parks, several pubs and the Walker Cricket Ground.
Notable residents who were born in Southgate include singer and songwriter Amy Winehouse, radio host Simon Mayo, English playwright and novelist Paul Scott, and English writer Leigh Hunt. Victoria Cross recipients Frederick Hitch and Allastair McReady-Diarmid were also from the area.
