A southeast London district, Thamesmead straddles the border between the London Borough of Bexley and the Royal Borough of Greenwich. The area is situated northeast of Woolwich, west of Erith and 18 km (11 miles) east of Charing Cross. Thamesmead consists of mainly social houses that were constructed during the middle part of the 1960s on former wetland on the River Thames’ southern shore.
Thamesmead has various local bands and active groups as well as 106.8 Time FM, a short-range commercial radio station. There are various places of worship within the district such as the Thamesmead Ecumenical Parish and the Redeemed Christian Church of God.
The closest stations in the district are Abbey Wood railway station, Woolwich Arsenal railway station, Belvedere railway station and Plumstead railway station. Owned by Thames Water, The Ridgeway cycle trail traverses Thamesmead from the sewage treatment works of Crossness to Plumstead railway station, splitting the district into North and South Thamesmead.
