Did you know that...
Tilbury is a district within the borough of Thurrock, in the county of Essex. A part of the Port of London, it has a main deep-water port that plays a crucial role to the local economy as well as a prehistoric cross-river ferry and 16th century fort. The present-day Tilbury was formed as an independent town during the latter part of the 19th century on land which was largely part of Chadwell St. Mary.
There is a ferry service that travels from Tilbury to Gravesend and is subsidized by Kent County Council and Thurrock Council. Tilbury Town station, on the c2c rail route, serves the area, while National Cycle Route 13 goes through Tilbury. There are also bus routes that connect the area to Lakeside Shopping Centre and Grays.
Notable people associated with the area include footballers Tom Scannell and John Evans, artist Noel Betowski, actor Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje and consultant surgeon Thomas Horrocks Openshaw. Tilbury F.C. is the town’s non-league football team and plays their home games at Chadfields.
