Did you know that...
Tottenham Court Road W1 is widely known as a shopping area for electronics. This is the place where one can find anything electronics related, from cables to computer systems and home appliances.
The now-closed UFO Club hosted performances from Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, Yoko Ono, and Soft Machine during the sixties.
The commercial thoroughfare marks a boundary between Bloomsbury and Fitzrovia districts. Tottenham Court Road is generally regarded as a shopping street hosting numerous furniture and consumer electronics retailers, and, in recent years, fashion stores and cafes.
If you want to escape the hustle and bustle of shops, go to the corner of Tottenham Court Road and Tottenham Court Street to find a quiet place to relax. Whitfield Gardens is a popular lunch spot that offers you the convenience of benches, paved square, and nice shrubbery. It stands on a site of a large pond called The Little Sea. In 1895 it was opened as a public space where everyone can take a breath.
Whitfield Gardens is also a home to the 60-foot Fitzrovia Mural, which was painted on the wall of the council-owned house in 1980 and recorded the life of the local community of those times. This large piece, which shows many people at work and at leisure, was created by artists Mick Jones and Simon Barber in a style resembling that of Diego Rivera. It took around six months to prepare the surface and paint the mural using household paints. The mural has suffered from sunlight, mould, and graffiti. Restoration measures of the mural are scheduled to take place in 2018, after many years of effort and preparation.
