West Thurrock is a municipality in Thurrock, Essex and conventional Church of England parish situated 28.1 km (17.5 miles) east southeast of Charing Cross. Thurrock means ‘the bottom of a ship’ in Saxon. The other two ‘Thurrocks’ aside from West Thurrock are Grays Thurrock and Little Thurrock.
The nearest districts in the area are South Ockendon, Chafford Hundred, Aveley and Grays. There are three railway stations close to West Thurrock, namely Purfleet railway station, Chafford Hundred railway station and Grays railway station.
West Thurrock is home to the Lakeside Shopping Centre, which sits on the location of a chalk quarry that Tunnel Cement owns. A now redundant parish church was used as the site for the funeral scene in the movie Four Weddings and a Funeral. Another famous building in the area is the neo-Gothic Belmont Castle (1795 to 1943).
